God Promises: He Hears You

1 JOHN 5:14-15 | PSALM 34:17

📖 Scripture Reading

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of him.”

— 1 John 5:14-15 (NIV)

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”

— Psalm 34:17 (NIV)

💡 Big Idea

Silence is not absence. The hardest seasons of prayer aren’t the ones where God says no — they’re the ones where you’re not sure anything landed at all. But Scripture never promises you’ll feel heard. It promises you are heard. Those are different things, and only one of them depends on how your morning is going.

✦
🌱 Life Principle
“God’s hearing has never depended
on how well you said it.”

John uses a specific word: confidence. Not hope, not optimism — confidence. And notice what he grounds it in. Not the eloquence of the prayer. Not the strength of the faith behind it. Not whether you got the words right or prayed long enough. He grounds it in who God is.

Most of us carry a quiet suspicion that prayer works better for other people — that there’s a way to do it we never quite learned. So we hedge. We keep it short, or general, or we stop bringing the thing that actually hurts because we’ve brought it so many times already.

David didn’t pray politely. Read the Psalms and you’ll find complaints, confusion, and questions with real edges on them. And in the middle of that, he writes plainly: the Lord hears. Not the polished version. The crying-out version. That’s the one Scripture says gets through.

☕ Coffee Moment

“The best conversations don’t happen in a hurry. They happen over a cup, with the phone face-down and nowhere else to be.”

There’s a reason we do our realest talking over coffee. Something about a warm cup slows a person down enough to say the true thing instead of the easy thing.

Prayer works the same way. It isn’t a form you submit. It’s a conversation with Someone already sitting across from you, already listening, already unhurried.

You don’t have to earn His attention this morning. You already have it. So say the honest thing — the one you’ve been editing down before you bring it. He heard the unedited version anyway.

✦
✅ Actionable Steps
1
Pray the unedited version.
Take the thing you’ve been softening before you bring it to God and say it plainly instead. No formal language, no cleanup. He isn’t grading the delivery, and pretending costs you the honesty that makes prayer real in the first place.
2
Start a short answered-prayer list.
Keep a running note on your phone. Write the date and the request when you pray it, and come back when something moves. Memory is unreliable in hard seasons — a list isn’t. It becomes evidence you can read on the mornings when it feels like nothing is getting through.
3
Bring the repeat request again.
If you’ve stopped praying for something because you’ve asked too many times, bring it back today. Nothing in Scripture suggests God tires of hearing from you. Persistence isn’t nagging Him — Jesus specifically taught the opposite.
4
Leave five minutes of quiet at the end.
Most of us talk and leave. This week, stay a few minutes past the amen with your coffee and no input — no phone, no music. You may not hear anything dramatic. But listening is part of a conversation, and it’s usually the part we skip.
